Are Dental X-Rays Safe

Dental X-rays are a valuable tool that our team at Guildford Family Dentistry utilizes to diagnose and treat oral health issues. We understand that some patients may be concerned about dental X-rays safety. Be assured that they are both safe and essential for maintaining good oral health

What are dental X-rays?

Dental X-rays are internal images of your teeth and jaw. They are used to examine the parts of your mouth that can’t easily be seen during a routine dental checkup, such as your jawbone, nerves, sinuses, and teeth roots.

Why are dental X-rays important?

Dental X-rays help us detect oral health issues such as cavities and gum disease.

With dental X-rays, we can assess and treat oral health issues before they become more severe. Dental X-rays can help prevent patients from dealing with tooth pain that can come with having tooth decay, gum disease, and other oral health issues. When it comes to children, dental X-rays shows us how their teeth and jawbones are developing.

There is minimal radiation

The radiation exposure from dental X-rays is extremely low and is equivalent to the amount of radiation you receive from the natural environment in one day. In other words, a routine dental X-ray exposes you to only a fraction of the radiation you naturally encounter daily from sources such as food, air travel, and building materials.

The average Canadian is exposed to approximately 3.1 millisieverts (mSv) of radiation per year from natural sources alone, while a single dental X-ray typically exposes you to just 0.005 mSv of radiation.

A comprehensive oral health routine is vital for oral health

A comprehensive oral health routine at Guilford Family Dentistry starts with a discussion. We take the time to discuss your oral health history, and work together to identify which aspects are the most important for you. We then conduct a comprehensive examination, where we examine the head, neck, teeth, lips, cheeks, tongue, salivary glands, jaw muscles and joints, and conduct a thorough oral cancer screening.

We will only take X-rays that are required for a complete exam, when necessary, we also take photographs of your teeth. Together, we discuss the findings of your exam, and review treatment options. We will do our best to answer any questions, and alleviate any concerns you may have.

Prevention is the best from of protection

Dental X-rays are non-invasive, and can save patients a lot of pain, time, and costly dental procedures later on. Dental X-rays are perfectly safe, and are part of a comprehensive oral health treatment plan.

Guildford Family Dentistry takes your oral health seriously

At Guildford Family Dentistry, we take extra precautions to minimize radiation exposure from dental X-rays. We use lead aprons to protect your body from radiation, and we only take X-rays when necessary to properly diagnose and treat oral health issues.
